J&J's 3Q Profit Rises 13 Percent on Sales
Johnson & Johnson's Third-Quarter Profit Is Up 13 Percent on Jump in Worldwide Sales
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- Profits at Johnson & Johnson rose 13 percent for the third quarter on a 10.5 percent increase in worldwide sales, the health care giant reported Tuesday.
Johnson & Johnson , which makes contact lenses, surgical products, contraceptives and baby and skin care products, had a net income of $2.34 billion, or 78 cents per share, for the July-September quarter, compared to $2.07 billion, or 69 cents a share, for the same 2003 period.
That beat, by 2 cents per share, the consensus forecast of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
Worldwide sales grew to $11.55 billion, up from $10.46 billion a year earlier, although 2.8 percentage points of the increase was from favorable currency exchange rates due to the weak dollar. International sales growth was 10.8 percent, while U.S. sales growth was 5.9 percent.
Of its three major divisions, only pharmaceutical posted double-digit gains, with worldwide sales of $5.5 billion representing a 13.4 percent increase. Consumer products sales rose 9.9 percent, to $2.02 billion, while medical devices and diagnostics rose 7 percent to $4.04 billion.
Shares of J&J rose 32 cents to $55.68 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Stocks Rise on Positive Earnings News Wednesday October 13
NEW YORK (AP) -- Investors welcomed a sharp dip in oil prices and positive earnings news from Intel Corp. Yahoo! Inc. and McDonald's Corp. Wednesday, sending stocks higher in early trading.
Intel surged $1.02 to $21.30 after beating Wall Street forecasts by 3 cents per share, although analysts' estimates were reduced after a disappointing mid-quarter update from the semiconductor maker. Other chip stocks also gained, with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. climbing 40 cents to $14.10 and National Semiconductor Corp. rising 56 cents to $15.79.
McDonald's said it expects to earn 61 cents per share in the third quarter, crediting a stronger tax situation and better international sales for its upgraded outlook. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 49 cents per share. McDonald's was up 85 cents at $28.40.
Yahoo! Inc. gained $1.67 to $35.90 after quadrupling its profits from a year ago. The company's earnings of 9 cents per share was in line with Wall Street expectations.

Trade Deficit Surges, Jobless Claims Up
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. trade deficit, propelled by a record foreign oil bill, surged to $54 billion in August, the second highest level in history. The politically sensitive deficit with China hit a new high as American retailers upped their orders for cell phones, toys and televisions.
The Commerce Department said the August trade deficit in goods and services was 6.9 percent higher than a $50.5 billion imbalance in July. A small 0.1 percent rise in exports was dwarfed by a 2.5 percent jump in imports.
In a second economic report, the Labor Department said the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose by 15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted level of 352,000. The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out weekly changes, rose by 4,000 to a seven-month high of 352,000.
The report on jobless claims reflects a labor market that is continuing to confound economists' expectations. The country added a lower-than-expected 96,000 jobs in September as the unemployment rate held steady at 5.4 percent.

Abbott Labs's 3Q Profits in Line With Expectations, Aided by Strong Medical Products Sales
ABBOTT PARK, Ill. (AP) -- Health-care products manufacturer Abbott Laboratories posted third-quarter results Thursday that were in line with Wall Street expectations, aided by the company's spin-off of its hospital products business and strong pharmaceutical and medical products sales.
Quarterly earnings rose to $804.1 million, or 51 cents per share, from $761.2 million, or 48 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding items, the company posted earnings of 53 cents per share in the latest quarter, compared with 49 cents last year.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were looking for Abbott to post earnings of 53 cents per share on revenue of $4.66 billion.

U.S. Jobless Claims Rose 15,000; More Than Expected
WASHINGTON -- The number of U.S. workers filing first-time applications for unemployment benefits rebounded last week, suggesting the labor-market recovery remains fitful.
Initial jobless claims rose by 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted level of 352,000 in the week that ended Oct. 9, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week average, which smoothes out weekly fluctuations, rose by 4,000 to a seven-month high of 352,000.
A Labor Department statistician said the increase last week partly reflected difficulties in making seasonal adjustments to the numbers. Those difficulties, he said, may have exaggerated the decline of 35,000 reported for the week of Oct. 2.
The size of the latest increase, in any case, surprised Wall Street. The average forecast of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC called for initial claims to rise by just 5,000. Over the last few months, the pace of job growth has proved disappointing despite the Federal Reserve's assertion that the economy has "regained some traction.

Sun Microsystems Narrows 1Q Loss; Revenue Up From Year Ago
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Sun Microsystems Inc. (SUNW) posted a narrowed loss for its fiscal first quarter, despite heavy restructuring charges, and the company reported its second consecutive quarter of revenue growth.
In a press release Thursday, Sun reported a quarterly loss of $174 million, or 5 cents a share, for the period ended Sept. 26, narrower than a loss of $286 million, or 9 cents a share, a year earlier.
The latest first quarter included a number of items, most notably a $108 million charge for work-force and real-estate restructuring as well as an $82 million litigation-settlement charge. Excluding items, earnings would have been $13 million, or less than 1 cent a share, beating analysts' mean estimate.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call, on average, predicted the company would post a first-quarter loss of 3 cents a share, before items.
Although Sun had overhauled its product line in recent months, some analysts though that wasn't enough for the company to surprise on the upside.

The University of Michigan reported that U.S. consumer sentiment sank in October, overshadowing earlier economic news of stronger-than-expected retail sales in September. The U-M consumer sentiment index fell to 87.5 from 94.2 in September while economists expected a much more modest drop to 93.9.

Providing a lift for stocks was news that U.S. retail sales jumped 1.5 percent in September as auto sales recorded the fastest increases since October 2001. The Commerce Department also said seasonally adjusted retail sales grew twice as fast as the 0.7 percent expected by Wall Street economists. Excluding the 4.2 percent rise in auto sales, retail sales improved by 0.6 percent in September, double the expectations on Wall Street. See Economic Report.

Wachovia's 3Q Profits Increase As Higher Revenue Offsets Declining Retail Brokerage Activity
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Financial services firm Wachovia Corp. said Friday that third-quarter earnings increased as declining retail brokerage activity was offset by higher revenue in wealth management and investment banking segments.

IBM
IBM reports its third quarter earnings after the bell today. The Thomson First Call average estimate is for earnings of $1.14 a share on revenue of $23.4 billion.
3M
3M (NYSE:MMM - News) , the first Dow component to report earnings this week, did little for investor confidence by posting third quarter results below analyst expectations, and warning on the fourth quarter.
Shares of the diversified industrial giant dropped 3.5 percent, to $75.25 in pre-market trading on Instinet.
Lexmark
Lexmark (LXK2) shares sagged 3% in preliminary dealings as a disappointing fourth-quarter outlook overshadowed a 50% income rise. The printer maker could earn up to a dime-per-share less than the consensus estimate, and that only with the aid of a one-time tax benefit. In an interview with Reuters, the boss blamed a "very weak consumer market." The company also noted "the potential for aggressive price competition" as rival Hewlett-Packard (HPQ3) tries to squeeze what growth it can from its own lucrative printing-supplies business.
Mattel
The corporate toy department spread no joy, what with Mattel (MAT4) and Hasbro (HAS5) reporting matching 2% sales drops and trimming holiday expectations. "As consumers respond to economic uncertainty, many retailers have been reluctant to take inventory risk for the holiday season," said Mattel's boss. His counterpart at Hasbro complained of an "uncertain retail environment." Both stocks were bid lower ahead of the opening bell.
Delphi
DETROIT (AP) -- Delphi Corp., the world's largest automotive supplier, said Monday it lost $114 million in the third quarter, reflecting lower North American vehicle production and higher material costs.
The July-September loss, which amounted to 20 cents a share, was far less than the loss of $353 million, or 63 cents a share, posted in the year-ago quarter when Delphi took a $356 million charge for restructuring.
Excluding $25 million in restructuring charges in the most recent quarter, Troy-based Delphi posted a loss of $66 million, or 12 cents a share, in line with the Wall Street consensus compiled by Thomson First Call.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- E-Trade Financial Corp.'s third-quarter profit rose 29 percent, despite a sharp drop in investor trading at its online brokerage and signs of weakness in its banking business. Management also raised the company's fourth quarter outlook.
The New York-based company said Monday that it earned $79.3 million, or 21 cents per share, during the three months ended in September. That compared with net income of $61.4 million, or 17 cents per share, at the same time last year.

The earnings topped the mean analyst estimate of 18 cents per share, according to Thomson First Call.

Kraft Posts 4 Percent Decline in Third-Quarter Profits on Increased Spending, Costs
CHICAGO (AP) -- Kraft Foods Inc., the nation's largest food manufacturer, posted a 4 percent decline in third-quarter profits Monday on increased marketing spending and higher commodity costs.
Kraft said improved sales of its U.S. products show its restructuring is starting to pay off.
Net earnings for the July-through-September quarter were $779 million, or 46 cents a share, down from $810 million, or 47 cents a share, for the same period a year ago.
That was a penny higher than the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call, who have been watching for a promised second-half recovery as Kraft revamps its product offerings and moves to become more diet-conscious.

U.S. stocks to open higher on lower oil, IBM results
Despite lower energy costs, U.S. consumer price inflation accelerated in September, rising 0.2 percent, the Labor Department said. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, inflation rose 0.3 percent, the most since April, largely because hotel prices soared.
Economists were expecting both the CPI and the core CPI to rise 0.2 percent, according to a survey of 37 economists by CBS MarketWatch.
Also, U.S. homebuilders slowed their pace of new construction in September, bringing housing starts lower by 6 percent to an annual pace of 1.898 million on a seasonally adjusted basis, the Commerce Department said.
Economists had expected a decline to 1.93 million starts, according to a survey conducted by CBS MarketWatch.
Elsewhere, solid results from Dow components Altria and McDonald's were giving the benchmark index a further boost and helping to erase some of the disappointment over Monday's disappointing results from 3M.

Ford Posts $266M Profit in 3Q Even Though Worldwide Automotive Operations Lost $609M
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -- Buoyed again by strong results at its financial services arm, Ford Motor Co. swung to a profit of $266 million in the third quarter even though its worldwide automotive operations lost $609 million.
Still, the company raised its full-year earnings guidance.
The nation's second-biggest automaker said Tuesday it earned 15 cents a share in the July-September quarter, compared with a loss of $25 million, or 1 cent a share, a year ago.
Excluding special items, Ford's third quarter earnings amounted to $537 million, or 28 cents a share, compared with a profit of $278 million, or 15 cents a share, a year ago.

Altria's Third-Quarter Profit Rises, Helped by Higher Equity Income From SABMiller
NEW YORK (AP) -- Tobacco and food giant Altria Group Inc.'s third-quarter profit rose 6.3 percent, helped by higher equity income from brewer SABMiller, favorable foreign exchange rates and a lower tax rate.
The parent company of Marlboro cigarettes and Kraft Foods on Tuesday also narrowed its full-year earnings outlook, raising the floor of its previous range.
For the third quarter ended Sept. 30, Altria earned $2.65 billion, or $1.29 a share, compared with $2.49 billion, or $1.22 a share, in the same quarter a year earlier.
Revenue rose 8.5 percent to $22.73 billion from $20.94 billion. A survey of analysts by Thomson First Call had forecast that revenue would decline to $20.67 billion.
However, Kellogg said he would remove a 2-cents-per-share benefit from a change in tax rate and a 2-cent charge for an asset impairment. These would essentially cancel each other out. He would also take out a gain of 5 cents a share form sales of investments at SABMiller. That reduces the company's earnings to $1.24 a share from $1.29 a share.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call projected, on average, operating earnings of $1.25 a share.

Continental Airlines Posts $16M 3Q Loss; Expects Losses for 2004, 2005 Unless Environment Improves
HOUSTON (AP) -- Continental Airlines Inc. on Tuesday reported a $16 million third-quarter loss, which included $22 million in special charges related to retirement of leased MD-80 aircraft.
The world's sixth-largest airline also said it expects to post "significant" losses for all of 2004 and 2005 unless the current environment improves.
Continued high fuel prices and government regulation were also cited as factors contributing to the loss of 24 cents per share in the quarter for the airline, which is based in Houston. The carrier posted earnings of $133 million, or $2.04 per share, for the same quarter one year earlier.
Excluding the special charges and including a $15 million gain relating to its Orbitz holdings, the airline said it earned $6 million, or 8 cents per share for the quarter. That compared favorably to the mean estimate of a 17-cent per-share loss expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.

Sprint Reports Wider Loss in Third Quarter As It Writes Off $3.5 Billion in Long Distance Assets
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) -- Sprint Corp. on Tuesday reported a wider loss for the third quarter as it wrote off $3.5 billion in value for its long-distance assets.
The Overland Park, Kan.-based telecommunications giant reported a loss of $1.9 billion, or $1.32 a share, for the July-September period in contrast to a loss of $497 million, or 35 cents a share, during the same period last year.
Sprint announced last week that it was moving away from stand-alone long distance service and would instead provide it only in package deals with local, wireless and Internet services. The company said it would lay off 700 workers and write down the value of its long distance assets by $3.5 billion.
Revenues for the quarter rose 3.1 percent to $6.9 billion from $6.7 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Excluding the write-down of the long distance assets, as well as restructuring charges, Sprint said it earned 24 cents per share, compared to 19 cents per share a year ago.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had expected earnings of 21 cents per share before charges on $6.9 billion in revenue

Marsh & McLennan Comments on Incentive Fees
Marsh & McLennan: Incentive Fees Made Up $1.2B in Revenue, Cessation Will Reduce Operating Income
NEW YORK (AP) -- The company at the center of a probe into insurance brokerage fees says it took in more than $1.2 billion in incentive payments over the past 18 months and that its decision to stop using such fees will reduce operating income.
Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. disclosed late Monday that its Marsh Inc. insurance unit collected $845 million of such fees in 2003, and another $420 million through June 30 this year.
The fees, which are over and above ordinary commissions, have been paid by insurance companies to brokers, mainly for steering profitable clients the insurer's way. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer sued Marsh & McLennan last week over the fees as well as for bid rigging, and said the investigation extends to several large insurers.
Spitzer's civil suit says the "placement service agreements," also known as contingent commissions or market service agreements, had led to corporate customers not getting the best prices on property and casualty policies.
New York-based Marsh & McLennan has since ended the practice, and this week two major insurance companies named in Spitzer's probe -- New York-based American International Group Inc. and Bermuda-based ACE Ltd. -- said they also have stopped using such incentives.

Greenspan: Home Prices Not Hurting Economy
Greenspan Says High Household Debt Levels and Surging Home Prices Not Hurting U.S. Economy
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The record level of debt being carried by American households and soaring home prices do not appear to represent serious threats to the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Tuesday.
Greenspan said that high levels of personal bankruptcies were a concern because they indicated "pockets of distress" among American households. But he said the vast majority of U.S. consumers "appear able to calibrate their borrowing and spending to minimize financial difficulties."
In a speech before America's Community Bankers, the organization that represents smaller banks in the country, Greenspan sought to play down worries about the high debt levels being carried by American households as a percentage of their after-tax incomes and the steep increases in home prices in recent years.
Some economists have expressed concerns that the big rise in home prices could represent a bubble that may deflate just as the stock market bubble did starting in the spring of 2000.
Greenspan, however, said it was unlikely that either the high level of household debt or the big rise in housing prices represented serious threats to the economy because Americans appeared to have sufficient resources to keep meeting their loan payments.
"Short of a significant fall in overall household income or in home prices, debt servicing is unlikely to become destabilizing," Greenspan said.
Greenspan said that it would take "a large, and historically most unusual" decline in home prices to wipe out the equity that Americans have in their homes. He said about three-fourths of all mortgages are taken out by buyers who put up a 20 percent downpayment, which would be enough to cover even a very significant drop in home prices.
He also said it was more difficult to generate a nationwide housing price bubble because of different forces at play around the country, but he conceded that price bubbles could be created by conditions in local markets.
"While local economies may experience significant speculative price imbalances, a national severe price distortion seems most unlikely in the United States, given its size and diversity," Greenspan said.
Greenspan said he did not want to totally dismiss the threats to the U.S. economy from increased levels of consumer debt, but he said that some overall statistical measures seemed to be overstating the problem.
He noted that household debt has been rising faster than incomes for at least the last 50 years as Americans have enjoyed rising levels of discretionary income, which they have used to buy more and more items on credit.
Greenspan said that one factor pushing up debt levels has been the increase in the number of Americans switching from renting to owning their own homes in recent years as the housing industry has enjoyed record sales levels driven by the lowest mortgage rates in more than four decades.
Overall, Greenspan said, "Household finances appear to be in reasonably good shape."

Motorola More Than Quadruples Third-Quarter Earnings to $479 Million, Largely on New Handsets
CHICAGO (AP) -- Motorola Inc., the largest U.S. cell phone maker, more than quadrupled its third-quarter earnings to $479 million thanks largely to new handsets that boosted its sales by 26 percent.
The results reported Tuesday slightly outpaced analysts' expectations and marked a third consecutive quarter of strong sales and profit gains for the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company. But its stock fell sharply in after-hours trading amid investor concerns about slowing growth in the fourth quarter.
Net earnings for the July-through-September quarter were $479 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with $116 million, or 5 cents per share, a year earlier. That was a penny per share better than the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
Revenues were $8.62 billion, up from $6.83 billion a year ago and about what Wall Street anticipated.
Motorola shares closed 3 cents higher at $18.75 before the report was released but traded as much as 5 percent lower in extended-hours activity after the company said sales growth would slow to 16 percent to 20 percent in the fourth quarter.

Delta Reports Much Wider Third-Quarter Loss Despite Revenue Gain, Warns on Financial Situation
ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. reported a much wider third-quarter loss despite a rise in revenue and warned that its financial situation has worsened to the point where it needs to significantly reduce its costs quickly to turn things around.
The results, announced Wednesday, missed Wall Street's reduced expectations.
The nation's third-largest airline said it lost $651 million, or $5.16 a share, for the three months ending Sept. 30, compared to a loss of $168 million, or $1.36 a share, in the same period a year ago. The current loss includes $5 million Delta paid out in dividends to preferred stockholders.
Excluding one-time items, Delta said it lost $592 million, or $4.73 a share, in the July-September period. On that basis, analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting a loss of $4.38 a share, an estimate that had been reduced after Delta warned of its loss on Friday.

Whirlpool Reduces Its Earnings Forecast, Will Raise Appliance Prices to Offset Higher Costs
BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Whirlpool Corp. said Wednesday it will raise prices of its appliances 5 percent to 10 percent in 2005 to offset higher costs that prompted it to reduce its earnings forecast for the year.
The company earned $101 million, or $1.50 per share, in the third quarter. That is 2 cents lower than the consensus forecast of $1.52 per share by analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call. In the same period a year earlier, it earned $105 million, or $1.48 per share.
Whirlpool, the world's second largest maker of home appliances, now says it expects to earn between $5.85 and $5.95 per share for all of 2004. Its previous estimate was for yearly profits of $6.20 to $6.35 a share.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Eastman Kodak Co., boosted by the sale of a remote sensing business and gains in digital photography, recorded a sharply higher profit in the third quarter and beat Wall Street forecasts by a wide margin.
The world's biggest film manufacturer, which is navigating a tough transition to filmless photography, said Wednesday it earned $479 million, or $1.67 a share, up from $122 million, or 42 cents a share, a year ago.
Excluding restructuring costs and a gain of $434 million, or $1.51 a share, from the sale of its historic remote sensing systems business, profits were $226 million, or 79 cents a share, far ahead of the consensus forecast of 72 cents among analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
Helped by the dollar's weakness abroad, sales edged up 1 percent to $3.364 billion from $3.346 billion a year ago. Excluding foreign-exchange gains, sales fell 2 percent.

Marsh Suspends 4 Employees Amid Spitzer Probe
NEW YORK -- Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC), under fire from regulators, suspended four employees whose names have surfaced as part of the New York attorney general's case alleging corrupt practices in the insurance industry, Wednesday's Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
The move by the world's largest insurance broker represents the first company fallout from the scandal. Last week, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer accused Marsh in a civil complaint of cheating corporate clients by rigging bids in arranging their insurance coverage. The day after the charges were filed, Marsh replaced the chairman and chief executive of Marsh Inc., its insurance-brokerage unit, but said it didn't reflect on his performance.
Marsh suspended William Gilman, executive director of marketing at Marsh Global Broking and a managing director of the huge insurance broker; Greg Doherty, a senior vice president in Marsh Global Broking's excess casualty division; and Edward McNenney, a brokerage executive, according to the person familiar with the matter. Also suspended was Samantha Gilman, Mr. Gilman's daughter. Mr. Gilman didn't return phone calls at home or on his work machine. Mr. Doherty didn't return calls. Mr. McNenney and Marsh declined to comment. Ms. Gilman couldn't be reached to comment.

Citigroup Ousts Three Top Officials
Citigroup Inc. (C) ousted Vice Chairman Deryck Maughan and two other senior executives in connection with a recently disclosed scandal involving its private-banking operations in Japan, Wednesday's Wall Street Journal reported.
In an internal memorandum issued late Tuesday, Chief Executive Charles Prince announced Mr. Maughan, head of the bank's international operations; Thomas Jones, chief executive of Citigroup Asset Management; and Peter Scaturro, chief executive of Citigroup Private Bank, will leave the company.
The departures represent the most-decisive move by Mr. Prince to set a new tone at the world's largest financial-services firm, which in recent years has been battered by a series of regulatory problems. In recent weeks, Mr. Prince has said he needed to be "talking about values" far more often to Citigroup employees around the globe, and said questionable behavior would be dealt with harshly.
Last month, Japanese regulators charged widespread wrongdoing in the way Citigroup treated its private-banking customers in Japan. The charges came as a particular embarrassment to Mr. Prince, who had been attempting to persuade investors that the regulatory problems of recent years were a thing of the past.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Office Depot Inc. said Wednesday that third-quarter earnings fell nearly 2 percent as back-to-school and European sales were weaker than expected for the nation's second-largest office supply retailer.
The announcement comes just over two weeks after Bruce Nelson was pressured to step down as chairman and CEO. His temporary replacement, Neil Austrian, has said a lack of "execution and focus" plagued the company.
Office Depot reported net income of $89.95 million, or 28 cents a share, in the three months ended Sept. 25, compared to $91.67 million, or 29 cents a share, a year ago.

J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM1) got burned by its bond traders. Pfizer (PFE2) faced the expiration of key patents. Motorola (MOT3) lost market share as handset sales lagged expectations. Fannie Mae (FNM4) faced an intensified accounting probe. Whirlpool (WHR5) and Electronic Arts (ERTS6) issued disappointing guidance. Delta Air Lines (DAL7) posted another huge loss.
Investors had lots of reasons to snub the market Wednesday. In a pinch, they could always fall back on lofty oil prices, the deadlocked presidential election or a mass purge of insurance stocks facing an ever-expanding fraud probe by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
Dow futures forecast a 25-point drop, for starters. Further selling would set up a test of the year's lows at 9815.

Overseas markets sagged as bearish Wall Street action reversed the prior day's relief gains. Oil prices firmed slightly, staying above $53 a barrel ahead of weekly inventory data.

European pharmaceutical companies also reporting earnings on Thursday fared better. Novartis AG reported a 21 percent profit rise, thanks to strong sales of the hypertension drug Diovan and cancer drugs. And AstraZeneca PLC said its net profit rose 51 percent even after federal regulators in the United States refused to approve the sale of Exanta, an anticoagulant that had been touted as a potential best seller.
Lilly shares fell over 4 percent on Thursday, and Merck's stock closed down 0.5 percent. But shares of Novartis and AstraZeneca both closed higher, gaining 0.5 percent and 0.9 percent, respectively. And shares of Schering-Plough Corp., which returned to profitability in the third quarter, closed 1.6 percent higher.

Google's 3Q Profit More Than Doubles
Google's Third-Quarter Profit More Than Doubles, Reflecting Surge in Online Advertising
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Google Inc. exceeded analyst expectations in its first quarterly earnings report as a public company, propelled by a continued surge in online advertising distributed by its Internet-leading search engine.
The Mountain View-based company said Thursday that it earned $52 million, or 19 cents per share, during the three months ended in September. That compared to $20.4 million, or 8 cents per share, at the same time last year.
The results marked Google's first financial review since completing its closely watched initial public offering in August. The profit included one-time charges to account for stock-based compensation and a previously announced settlement of a patent dispute with rival Yahoo Inc.
Without those charges, Google told analysts during a conference call that it would have earned 70 cents per share.
That was well above the mean estimate of 56 cents per share among analysts polled by Thomson First Call. Analyst forecasts had varied widely because Google hadn't provided any previous financial outlook and management has vowed to continue that policy.

Wireless Equipment Giant LM Ericsson Reports Solid 3Q Profit, Says Outlook Improving
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Wireless equipment maker LM Ericsson posted a third-quarter profit that was in line with analysts' expectations and said its mobile networks were expected to show signs of slight growth in the coming months.
The world's largest supplier of equipment for wireless phone networks reported a profit of $666.6 million, or 4 cents a share for the July-September period compared with a loss in the same period last year.
Sales reached $4.4 billion, up 14 percent from a year ago.
Shares of Ericsson were down 6.7 percent to $2.91 during early trading on the Stockholm exchange as bullish investors were reminded that Ericsson's growth, while expected to gain slightly through the rest of the year and into 2005, wasn't going to explode as the pent-up spending by telecom operators levels off.

Oil, Economy Hot Topics on Wall Street
Oil, Economy Hot Topics on Wall Street This Week; Investors Should Cheer Energy Companies' Reports
NEW YORK (AP) -- When will oil prices fall? For investors holding energy stocks, there's no rush. But with the third-quarter gross domestic product report coming out this week, the rest of Wall Street would prefer sooner rather than later.
 ECONOMIC DATA:
Friday's GDP report will certainly dominate the market, especially as major earnings reports begin to trail off. Economists are expecting an optimistic 4 percent increase in the nation's GDP, which is the measure of goods and services produced in the United States. That's up from a 3.3 percent hike in the second quarter.
On Tuesday, the Conference Board is scheduled to release the latest reading of its consumer confidence index. The index is, not surprisingly, expected to fall to 94.4 in October from a 96.8 reading in September.
Finally, the Commerce Department will report on orders of durable goods -- products expected to last longer than three years -- which is considered a sign of future manufacturing growth. Orders are expected to have risen 0.5 percent in September, up from a 0.5 percent decrease in August.
 EARNINGS:
With oil prices making record highs on a weekly basis, petroleum giants Exxon Mobil and ChevronTexaco have been two of the market's top performers. From a low of $40.01 on March 24, Exxon Mobil has risen 21.7 percent to close at $48.70 on Friday. The company, which is scheduled to report its results before Thursday's session, is forecast to earn 84 cents per share for the third quarter, up from the 55 cents per share posted a year ago.
Likewise, ChevronTexaco has seen a decent run-up in its share price as well, closing Friday at $53.34, up 26 percent from its 2004 low of $42.34 on March 25. Reporting Friday before the session, ChevronTexaco is expected to earn $1.31 per share, up from a profit of 93 cents per share a year ago.
Among other notable companies announcing earnings in the week ahead, Verizon Communications Corp. is actually expected to post a lower profit than a year ago when it announces its results Thursday morning. Analysts are calling for profits of 64 cents per share for the quarter, down from 67 cents per share last year. Verizon stock has fluctuated widely this year, ranging from $23 to $29 per share, as the Dow component has worked hard to trim costs and boost its wireless business. Shares of Verizon closed Friday at $26.28, down 82 cents.
Media conglomerate Viacom Inc., announcing earnings Thursday before the session, has seen its stock fall from a 2004 high of $44.61 on Jan. 5 to close at $34.39 on Friday, a loss of 22.9 percent. The company is expected to earn 41 cents per share for the third quarter, up slightly from the 40 cents per share it posted a year ago.
 Other companies posting earnings include:
-- American Express Co. on Monday, expected to earn 69 cents per share, compared with 59 cents a year ago;
-- Halliburton Co. on Tuesday morning, expected to earn 36 cents per share, compared with 32 cents a year ago;
-- Northrup Grumman Corp. on Wednesday before the session, forecast to earn 71 cents per share, up from 61 cents per share a year ago; and
-- Aetna Inc. on Thursday morning, expected to earn $1.73 per share, up substantially from the $1.27 per share profit from a year ago.

BellSouth's 3Q Profit Falls in 3Q on Flat Revenue and Continued Loss of Local Access Lines
ATLANTA (AP) -- BellSouth Corp., the dominant local phone provider in nine Southeastern states, reported a 14.6 percent drop in third-quarter profit on flat revenue and a continued loss of local access lines.
The results, announced before the market opened Monday, missed Wall Street expectations.
BellSouth warned Monday that it would record incremental labor and material costs of roughly $90 million in the fourth quarter due to the hurricanes that hit Florida. The figure is more than double the $38 million of costs BellSouth recognized in the third quarter.
The Atlanta-based company said the hurricanes affected more than 1.2 million of its residential and business customers.
BellSouth said it earned $799 million, or 44 cents a share, for the three months ending Sept. 30, compared to a profit of $936 million, or 51 cents a share, in the same period a year ago.
Excluding one-time items, BellSouth said it earned $893 million, or 49 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were expecting earnings of 51 cents a share before one-time items.

HOUSTON (AP) -- Oilfield services giant Halliburton Co. on Tuesday swung to a loss in the third quarter ended Sept. 30, hurt by hefty charges from discontinued operations related to the settlement of asbestos and silica claims.
The company's loss of $44 million, or 9 cents per share, compared with earnings of $58 million, or 13 cents, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, Halliburton's income from continuing operations of 42 cents per share would have beat estimates for a profit of 36 cents from analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- DuPont Co. reported a third-quarter profit Tuesday, saying higher sales volumes and local selling prices offset a sharp increase in the cost of energy and raw materials.
The Wilmington-based chemical giant reported net income of $331 million, or 33 cents per share, compared to a loss of $873 million, or 88 cents, in the third quarter of 2003.
Excluding special items, the company posted earnings of $253 million, or 25 cents per share.

Strong earnings from Lockheed Martin Corp. and Halliburton Co., along with a strong profit outlook from General Electric Co., cheered many investors, though Dow component DuPont Co. fell despite a credible third-quarter performance.

Lockheed Martin added 88 cents to $54.38 as its growing information technology business offset a slumping space division, helping the company post a 41 percent jump in earnings. The aerospace giant, which beat analysts' forecasts by 4 cents per share, issued a tepid full-year outlook, however.

General Electric gained 73 cents to $33.63 as it backed Wall Street's view of its fourth-quarter and full-year profit forecasts, citing strength across the conglomerate's various divisions.

Halliburton added $1.38, or 4 percent, to $35.73, even as the company swung to a loss, weighed down by continued asbestos claims settlements. Without the one-time losses, the company would have exceeded profit forecasts by 6 cents per share.

DuPont fell 78 cents to $41.40 after the chemical company swung to a profit in the third quarter despite higher raw materials costs. DuPont, which beat Wall Street expectations by a penny per share, also reiterated its full-year profit outlook, though some investors worried that materials and energy costs would eventually sap the company's profits.

U.S. Steel Corp. finished up $1.60, or 4.5 percent, at $37.45, after returning to profitability in the third quarter, blowing past Wall Street profit forecasts by 58 cents per share thanks to higher demand. The company also said it expects a strong fourth quarter.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (Dow Jones)--Aflac Corp.'s (AFL) third-quarter earnings rose 27% as revenue increased due to a stronger average yen/dollar exchange rate.
However, the insurer said it was "disappointed" in its sales growth in Japan and the U.S., and doesn't expect to meet its full-year sales target.
The company also provided fourth-quarter earnings estimates below an analysts' mean forecast, but reaffirmed estimated operating earnings-per-share growth, before foreign currency translation, for fiscal years 2004 through 2006.
In a press release Tuesday, the company said its third-quarter earnings rose to $301 million, or 58 cents a share, from $237 million, or 45 cents a share, a year earlier.
The latest quarter included a gain of $6 million, or 1 cent a share, from the change in fair value of the interest rate component of cross-currency swaps, as required by SFAS 133. In the year-ago third quarter, earnings included a loss of $2 million, or 1 cent a share, from the effect of SFAS 133.
Excluding items, third-quarter earnings were $299 million, or 58 cents a share, which came in a penny ahead of Wall Street estimates. A year earlier, operating earnings were $245 million, or 47 cents a share.

Nonetheless, Comcast said it had a record number of new high-speed Internet subscribers and strong growth in its digital cable division.
For the three months ended Sept. 30, the company earned $220 million, or 10 cents per share, down from $3.18 billion, or $1.41 a share, a year ago when it had a gain of nearly $3.3 billion on the sale of its 57 percent interest in QVC.

Similarly, Black & Decker Corp. (NYSE:BDK - News) raised its view for the rest of 2004 and 2005 after posting strong third quarter results.

September Durable Goods Orders Rise Less Than Expected
WASHINGTON -- Durable goods orders rose in September, as strong spending on capital goods offset weakness in orders for metals and aircraft.
Orders for manufactured goods meant to last three years or more increased 0.2% to $195.7 billion in September, the Commerce Department said Wednesday. Orders for non-defense capital goods excluding aircraft -- a barometer of business spending -- rose 2.6%, after a 0.3% increase in August.
Overall orders fell 0.6% in August, a downward revision from the previously reported 0.3%% decline. Orders were up 1.9% in July.
September's increase fell short of expectations on Wall Street. A Dow Jones-CNBC survey of 20 economists had predicted orders would gain 0.6%. Ahead of the report, analysts had noted a recent trend for durable goods orders to rise sharply in the last month of the quarter. The durable goods data are some of the most volatile reported by the government. Estimates are routinely revised, sometimes sharply. Analysts, therefore, caution against using the monthly figures when trying to tell which way the U.S. economy is going.

New Home Sales Surge to Third Highest Monthly Level on Record
In a second report, the department said that new home sales rose 3.5 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.21 million units, the third highest level on record behind the record rate of 1.27 million set in March and a rate of 1.25 million in May.
The housing market, fueled by the low mortgage rates, has continued to be red hot with both sales of new and existing homes headed for new all-time highs for the year.
The 3.5 percent increase in new home sales took economists by surprise. They had been expecting a decline. Sales rose a revised 5.8 percent in August following an 8.1 percent decline in August.

Wall Street Expects Large DreamWorks IPO
By Gary Gentile, AP Business Writer
Wall Street Expecting a Large IPO From DreamWorks Animation on Thursday
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It's shaping up to be an ogre-sized debut for shares of the company that made the animated hits "Shrek" and "Shark Tale."
Shares of DreamWorks Animation Inc. are scheduled to begin trading Thursday and were priced Wednesday night at $28 per share -- higher than the $23 to $25 per share target in the company's prospectus.
At that price, DreamWorks will raise $812 million from the 29 million shares it will make available in its initial public offering. The company said it would give its underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 4.35 million shares of common stock to cover any over-allotments.

Marsh Ex-CEO Exercises Stock Options
Former Marsh CEO Who Resigned Amid Inquiry Exercises 540,000 Stock Options
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jeffrey W. Greenberg, who resigned this week as chairman and chief executive of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., amid a regulatory inquiry into its policies, exercised options to obtain 540,000 shares in his former employer, according to a filing Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The embattled former CEO's options had strike prices of about $14.48 to about $20.64 each, the filing said.
Shares of New York-based Marsh closed trading Wednesday at $28.69.
The insurance broker's share price has sunk nearly 40 percent since New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed civil charges against the company alleging Marsh cheated corporate clients by rigging bids and collecting huge fees from insurance companies for steering business to them.

Investors also had a slew of earnings reports to hash over, including a strong report from blue chip ExxonMobil.
The oil giant, a Dow component, bested analysts' expectations as it reported a 56 percent increase in third-quarter net income, boosted by high oil and gas prices, better refining and marketing results and record chemical earnings.
Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ - News) , another Dow Stock, reported third-quarter net income per share flat with the year earlier, at 64 cents, on 6.7 percent higher revenue. Before special items, share net was 65 cents against 67 cents. Revenue advanced to $18.21 billion from $17.06 billion.
Elsewhere, Gillette Co. (NYSE:G - News) reported third-quarter 47 cents a share on sales of $2.69 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected earnings of 43 cents a share. Read more.
Viacom Inc. (NYSE:VIAb - News) also bested earnings forecasts with its third-quarter report but revenue fell well short of expectations. Viacom, a significant investor in MarketWatch Inc., the publisher of this report, also boosted its quarterly dividend and set an $8 billion stock buyback program.
Newell Rubbermaid (NYSE:NWL - News) , however, swung to a loss in its latest quarter as sales fell from year-ago levels.
Aetna Inc. reported a nearly 500 percent increase in third-quarter profits, crediting higher membership and a one-time tax credit for the gains, which beat Wall Street estimates by 11 cents per share. The company also brightened its outlook for future profits. Aetna surged $2.73 to $94.48.
Defense company Raytheon Co. was up 24 cents at $36.90 after it swung to a profit on a 13 percent increase in revenues. The company beat analysts' forecasts by 4 cents per share.

U.S. GDP Advances 3.7% in 3rd Quarter; Inflation Plummets
 Dow Jones Newswires
WASHINGTON -- U.S. economic growth picked up in the third quarter, but not as much as expected, as faster consumer spending was offset in part by a slower pace of inventory building by businesses and slower exports.
Gross domestic product -- a measure of all goods and services produced in the U.S. -- increased in the period from July through September at a 3.7% annual rate, the Commerce Department said Friday. That is faster than the 3.3% pace recorded in the second quarter, but below the 4.5% rate in the first quarter. Meanwhile, inflation slowed sharply during the third quarter.
The advance third-quarter number was weaker than Wall Street had predicted. A Dow Jones Newswires-CNBC survey of 21 economists forecast growth of 4.3% for the three-month period. Ahead of the report, analysts had pointed to evidence of rebounding consumer spending and a surge in business spending as reasons to expect faster growth. The Commerce Department's first report of GDP is based on assumptions for trade and inventories for the last month of the quarter, and may be revised up or down.
Inflation gauges in the report showed an abrupt deceleration. The government's price index for personal consumption -- a closely watched measure of inflation -- rose at a 1.1% rate during the third quarter after 3.1% in the prior period. The price index for gross domestic purchases, which measures prices paid by U.S. residents, rose at a 1.8% rate in the third quarter. It advanced 3.5% in the second quarter. The chain-weighted GDP price index increased at a 1.3% rate, after a 3.2% pace in the second quarter.

earnings
Elsewhere in the oil patch, earnings news was disappointing with both ChevronTexaco (NYSE:CVX - News) and Andarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC - News) both posting third-quarter numbers that fell short of analysts' expectations.
In other earnings, Archer Daniels Midland (NYSE:ADM - News) topped fiscal first-quarter forecasts with a report of earnings of 41 cents a share on $8.97 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had expected earnings of 27 cents in the quarter.
Avon Products (NYSE:AVP - News) , meanwhile, boosted its outlook for all of 2004 to a range of $1.75 to $1.77 a share from its previous $1.72 per share forecast after a better-than-expected third-quarter report. A potentially lower fourth-quarter tax rate also influenced the move.
Also-ran PC maker Gateway (GTW) sprinted to a 13% lead in premarket action after eking out a surprise operating gain, its first in nearly three years. The $4 million in notional profit was swallowed by the usual heavy restructuring charges, although the company did cut its net loss by more than half, to $56 million. Business fundamentals remain somewhat dubious, to say the least, what with PC shipments up 67% in a year's time thanks to an acquisition, while revenue rose less than 4%. But analysts spied signs of a long-term turnaround.

In U.S. corporate news, Tyco International reported fourth-quarter earnings of 22 cents a share, up from 15 cents a share last year. The current fourth quarter includes a charge of 23 cents a share on early retirement of debt. Excluding the charge, operating earnings of 45 cents a share beat the Wall Street estimate of 43 cents. The industrial conglomerate reported revenue of $10.44 billion in the quarter, up from $9.27 billion a year ago.
Humana Inc., citing strong returns from its Medicare business, more profitable commercial segment customer risk mix and higher-than-expected Tricare bid prices adjustments, reported third-quarter net income rose 35 percent. The health-care company also raised its 2004 earnings guidance, which remains above prior-year results. For the third quarter, Humana earned $84.3 million, or 52 cents a share, up from $62.1 million, or 38 cents a share, a year ago.

jobless claims
On the economic front, the latest jobless claims offered some ammunition to those investors who believe economic growth in the U.S. is holding up well.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 19,000 to 332,000 last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday.
The decline was larger than expected. Economists were expecting a drop in initial claims to about 340,000, according to a survey conducted by CBS Marketwatch.

Hurricanes Jump-Start Hiring in October
Cleanup Efforts From Hurricanes Help Jump-Start Hiring With October Payrolls Expanding by 337,000
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Employers aggressively hired new workers in October, adding 337,000 people to payrolls after a sluggish summer, although the overall unemployment rate rose marginally, to 5.5 percent.
The 0.1 percent rise in the seasonally adjusted civilian rate happened largely because the new hiring was to some degree offset by increasing numbers of people who came into the labor market in search of work.
Nevertheless, the expansion in payrolls last month was nearly double what economists had forecast, the Labor Department reported Friday, saying that cleanup efforts from hurricanes that struck Florida and much of the Southeast helped jump-start the labor market.
The report on new hiring was good news for President Bush as he prepares for a second term. A generally weak job market plagued his campaign for re-election, offering a political target to his Democratic challenger, John Kerry.
Economists had expected October payrolls to grow by about 175,000 with the jobless rate holding steady at 5.4 percent. Employers have added about 2.2 million jobs since August 2003.
But the rate climbed to 5.5 percent as more people renewed their job searches, expanding the pool of available workers.
Hiring in construction helped spur last month's job growth, with employment in that sector rising by a net 71,000 jobs.

Payroll Surge Prods Bulls
THE BIGGEST JOBS GAIN in six months set up a third straight stock-market rally Friday, while bonds priced for sluggish growth slumped.
U.S. employers added 337,000 payrolls in October, way above Wall Street's expectation for a net gain of 190,000, led by the service and construction sectors as the Southeast recovered from the recent spate of hurricanes. The unemployment rate crept up from 5.4% to 5.5% as the improving economy drew more job seekers.
As an added bonus, job growth during August and September appeared a lot less disappointing in retrospect as government statisticians backdated an extra 156,000 jobs, nearly doubling the presumed gains for that two-month period. The economy has now added a net of more than two million jobs over the last year as companies start to spend record profits.
Dow futures anticipated a 55-point gain for starters, while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 aimed for gains of roughly 1%.
Bonds depreciated quickly on the news, pushing the 10-year Treasury yield to 4.19%. The dollar rallied from longtime lows.
